Simple Ways to Increase Your Order Values on Shopify
When setting up your online shop, you likely thought about getting quality photos, writing product descriptions, and making sure everything looks really nice. But, you may not realize how easy it is to increase the average order value (or AOV) of your customers! Here are a few ways:
Increase Your Free Shipping Minimum
Have you ever spent $15 more on a purchase so that you could get free shipping and save $7? It doesn’t make sense, but we’ve all done it! Simply making this threshold a bit higher will encourage your customers to add that one more thing to their cart.
Take a look at your Shopify reports and see where your average order amount current sits. Let’s say it’s falling at $52, since you offer free shipping over $50. If your items tend to fall in the $25-35 range, upping your free shipping offering to $75 instead of $50 will encourage your shoppers to add one more item! You clear more inventory, and they get to try out another item.
Create Urgency to Purchase
People love a deal, an exclusive, or to catch something last minute. This doesn’t mean you have to start offering steep discounts! A few ideas:
Use a countdown timer app (like this or this) to mark your last day of shipping before major holidays (i.e. Order by 12/17 to receive by Christmas!)
Invoke scarcity: Mark products that are low in stock with a banner that says “while supplies last” or “only a few left!” to share that these are hot tickets. You can also use banners like “Top/Best Seller” to make people feel like they don’t want to miss out on this amazing item. Many themes have these product marker options built in!
Cross-Sell with Recommended Related Products
If a shopper loves one item, chances are, there is something else in your shop they’d love but haven’t found yet. Using an app like Essential Upsell & Cross Sell, you can have a pop up appear once an item is added to cart with messaging like “You May Also Love This” or “Frequently Purchased With” to pique your customer’s interest. These can be related items, like another scent in the same candle, or complementary items, like adding a candle snuffer to go with said candle. You can also have collections display in cart so that they see some related items before they proceed to checkout.
Bonus: Don’t Forget About Email Marketing
I know, I know: no one wants more emails. But the statistics show that shops that implement and email marketing plan see drastic increases in shop sales. Add that email opt-in to your shop with a fun offer in exchange (percent off your first order, free shipping, free gift, etc). Start small with a monthly newsletter highlighting new products, and try to work your way up to once a week. These don’t have to be epic novels — just share what you are loving and how it can impact your customers.
